Introducing a New Class of Refrigerants for AC, Heat Pump, and Ductless Air Systems Alike!

As of January 1, 2025, all new air conditioners and heat pumps (including ductless air systems) are being manufactured with one of two new refrigerants: R-32 or R-454B . Both are eco-friendlier than the R-410A refrigerant they’re replacing.

The Phaseout R-410A Refrigerant

Prior to 2025, R-410A was the standard refrigerant for home and commercial AC systems. R-410A replaced the refrigerant R-22 (Freon), which was phased out in 2010 and banned in 2020 for its negative impact on the ozone layer. Though not ozone-depleting, R-410A still was not an environmentally ideal solution.

New AC Refrigerants

Two refrigerants have emerged to take R-410A’s place: R-454B and R-32. Some manufacturers have fully embraced one or the other, while other companies have chosen to use both for different applications. Both refrigerants have lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R-410A and performed admirably during the product testing phases of their development.

R-454B Refrigerant

Most HVAC manufacturers in the United States have adopted R-454B as the new standard refrigerant to replace R-410A for these primary reasons:

• Far from GWP limit: R-454B’s global warming potential (GWP) rating of 467 is 78% lower than R-410A’s GWP and well below the EPA’s limit of 700 GWP.
• Small learning curve: In the testing phases, the new refrigerant behaved very similarly to R-410A, reducing the learning curve for AC companies like us to become familiarized with its usage.

“Can I Still Purchase a System With R-410A Refrigerant?”

The short answer is “yes,” but only for as long as supplies last of systems manufactured prior to 2025.
