Furnaces are hard to part with. At first, we love them because they’re super reliable and everything its predecessor no longer was.
As the years roll on, maybe you hold your breath a little once the heating system starts, hoping your furnace will engage and pick up where it left off. As even more time goes by, you’re start thinking “Come on furnace, just one more season!”
And then what?” It’s time to replace it.
If that time is now, here are several factors that should influence your decision.
- Repair or replace? Whether or not it’s time to replace your furnace isn’t always a clear-cut decision. If your system is at least 12 years old and you’re faced with a repair of $1,000 or more, is it worth it? It might be, provided your HVAC technician tells you the furnace is otherwise in good shape. Even so, consider how much you can save on heating costs with a replacement system.
- Assess the expected energy savings. New furnaces often have similar features from one brand to another and, in most cases, are equally reliable. Read the reviews, of course, and ask your installer for a recommendation. But also ask about energy efficiency. The higher the AFUE the rating, the lower the energy costs. Will the added savings compensate for a higher cost furnace? C&D Cooling & Heating can help you decide.
- It’s not just the box that counts. Your house can’t be heated efficiently – even with a brand-new furnace – if you’re faced with leaking ductwork, air leaks through doors and windows, not enough attic insulation, and more. Be sure to have these and other efficiency-impacting items checked prior to installation.
- Choose a contractor that guarantees their work in writing. Without that assurance, you could be out in the cold if your new furnace does not live up to your expectations, no matter what the reason.
- System extras. A programmable thermostat, variable-speed blower, built-in air filtration system, and other optional features can enhance indoor comfort and further decrease heating costs. Take the time to consider the added value each such system component can provide.
