Tips for a Healthy Winter Season

Ready for a positive spin on winter? Okay, here it comes. By practically being forced to spend more time indoors due to colder temperatures and fewer daylight hours, you have more time to unwind, catch up on your reading, and just take a breather from your otherwise busy lifestyle.

That doesn’t sound so awful, does it? Still, you know what they say about too much of a good thing, even when that good thing is rest and relaxation.  So yes, give your mind and body a break, but follow these common-sense tips for staying healthy, too.

Supplements: Vitamin D is useful in helping the body fight off infections, decrease joint pain, control blood sugars, and may even help prevent certain cancers. During the long winters when the sun is low in the sky, the body is less able to produce vitamin D. Adding vitamin D through a multivitamin or changes in your diet (like eating more eggs and fish) will help.

Plants: The more time you spend indoors, the more difficult it is to feel connected to nature. Adding more plants to your living environment can help. Plus, certain varieties of house plants are highly effective at removing bacteria and other pollutants from your air. These include Boston Ivy, Aloe Vera, Spider Plants, and several others.

Dry skin: Handwashing is a great way to prevent spreading viruses and infection, but it also can do a number on your skin. So, rub a soothing lotion into your hands after washing.

Exercise: It may be more difficult to practice your regular exercise regimen during the winter, but there are other ways to help keep yourself fit. Join a gym or buy yourself a simple exercise mat or treadmill and workout daily indoors. When conditions permit, take an exhilarating walk outdoors. Get your kids involved, too, as staying active strengthens the immune system, helps prevent winter weight gain, and helps fend off winter depression
