What happens if you don’t clean out closets periodically? Not much other than, maybe, adding to the clutter. What happens if you don’t clean the outside of your windows? Again, not much, other than perhaps a tiny bit of impaired vision.
But what happens when you don’t keep up with cleaning or replacing your air conditioning and furnace filters? All kind of things that are best to prevent:
- A clogged filter forces your system to work harder to cool your home to the desired temperature.
- Given enough time, you won’t get as much warm or cool air as you want.
- That, in turn, results in extra wear and tear which can lead to premature repair problems.
- A clogged filter also drives up your energy costs.
- The harder your home comfort systems work, the shorter their equipment life.
All of that’s not great news. But here’s potentially worse news. A clogged filter contains accumulated dust, dirt, germs, pesticides, and whatever else enters your home or your air ducts, like chemical cleaning byproducts. So, when your ducts are pushing that air through your filters and into your living spaces, some of those particles go along for the ride.
Once they reach the open spaces, they’re free to:
- Aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms
- Bring about common colds and Influenza A
- Cause other upper respiratory ailments
- Spread dust and dirt on your furniture, thus requiring you to clean more often
Cleaning and replacing your filters on a regular basis is one solution, but not the only one. Even with flawless upkeep, your indoor air can still become polluted, in which case a whole-house air filtration system might be a more far-reaching solution.
