Winter Personal Safety Tips.

You don’t have to be an avid skier to enjoy the winter months. Simple pleasures can be just as rewarding, like walking your dog. Sledding down a hill. And building a snow man with your kids. (Notice how we’re saying nothing about shoveling snow?!)

Whatever gets you outdoors when temperatures hover around or dip below freezing, safety should always be on your mind: your own and that of family and friends accompanying you.

Here are 10 tips to keep in mind before venturing outside this winter.

  1. Dress in warm layers of clothing, each one easily removable should it become wet.
  1. Wear mittens instead of gloves for warmer hands – a great way to ward off frostbite.
  1. Wear a hat, knit headband, or earmuffs – another frostbite preventive measure.
  1. Just because your boots are waterproof doesn’t mean they’ll keep your feet warm. Choose those that are well insulated or wear extra thick socks.
  1. Apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin to prevent sunburn if you plan to be outdoors for an extended period of time.
  1. Limit your time outdoors if the temperature or wind chill is -15 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Common sense will dictate, at least to a point, your own personal threshold for cold and blustery conditions.
  1. Whether shoveling snow or playing, take periodic breaks to rest and warm up.
  1. Before shoveling or doing any strenuous work, avoid caffeine and nicotine. They increase your heart rate and may cause your blood vessels to constrict.
  1. Do not ice skate on ponds or lakes unless you know for sure the ice is at least 8” thick OR see a sign indicating it’s safe to skate.
  1. When walking at night, wear a jacket with reflective strips or carry a flashlight so drivers can clearly see you.
