5 Common AC Repair Problems and What They Mean

Air conditioner repairs can be costly, so it’s essential to schedule regular maintenance to help keep your system in prime working condition. Still, even with the best care, yours won’t last forever. How would you know if that time were coming or already at hand?

Here are five common indications that your AC system needs help. By responding in time, hopefully you can get more useful years out of it.

System Not Turning On

The first thing to do is check your thermostat. The solution could be as simple as replacing the battery. If it’s not dead, check to see if the cooling mode is on. Still not working? Then check the circuit breaker. And if that doesn’t do the trick, it’s time to contact C&D Cooling & Heating.

Not Blowing Cold Air

If your AC filter is clogged with dirt and dust, airflow will be restricted and eventually shut off. So, if you hear the fan running but don’t feel cool air, check the filter, and clean or replace it as needed.  Don’t wait too long, either, because a dirty filter also can cause the outside condensing unit to freeze and further limit the system’s cooling power.

Frozen Condensing Unit

Your air conditioner can freeze up due to:

  • Insufficient airflow
  • Low outside temperature
  • Low coolant levels
  • Blower motor problems
  • Stuck contractor

Given all the possibilities, it’s best to contact us before taking any further action, other than to first turn the system off.

System Noises

There are different reasons why your air conditioner is producing a variety of sounds:

  • Refrigerant leaks can produce a hissing sound.
  • A clicking sound as you turn the system off indicates a problem with a relay.
  • Thumping, rattling, or banging noises mean that either the blower or motor assembly isn’t functioning properly.
  • The compressor or fan motor produces a screeching noise.
  • Faulty electrical components produce a buzzing sound.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Blocked vents and ducts, dirty filters, or a faulty fan can cause insufficient system airflow in the system which, in turn, can cause the evaporator coil to freeze and your system to shut down.

Most of the time, these problems are repairable. To ensure the job is done correctly with your satisfaction guaranteed, contact C&D Cooling & Heating. We service and repair all makes and models of AC systems, including yours!
