How to Heat Your Open Floor Plan Home More Efficiently

There’s a lot to love about an open floor plan home – more natural light, better flow, and increased social interaction are just some of the benefits homeowners enjoy.

Unfortunately, this layout also presents some challenges. In addition to a lack of privacy and it being difficult to conceal clutter, an open floor plan home can be expensive to heat.

You see, unlike a traditional or “formal” floor plan that can be divided into HVAC zones, an open floor plan requires that the entire space be heated (or cooled) whether it’s occupied or not. But don’t worry, we have some easy and effective solutions to keep you warm while keeping heating costs in check. Continue reading to learn more.

Seal and Insulate

We lose a surprising amount of warmed air through cracks and gaps around windows, doors, and electrical outlets. Take the time to caulk and seal any cracks or crevices in your home and make sure you have adequate attic and basement insulation to keep warm air in and cold air out.

Use a Ceiling Fan

Take full advantage of your ceiling fan by running it in reverse during the colder months. Because warm air rises, running a ceiling fan in reverse directs heated air downward where you need it most. This allows you to turn the thermostat down a couple of degrees, taking pressure of your heating system without sacrificing comfort. Just remember to switch the settings back when winter ends.

Supplement

Do members of your household tend to congregate in one area like the family room? Supplement your main heat source with a natural gas or electric fireplace, pellet or wood stove, or space heater to take some pressure off your primary heating system.

Warm the Floor

Another source of supplemental heat, under-floor heating can be added when constructing a new home or remodeling an existing one. And don’t forget to cover cold floors with plush area rugs or thick carpeting.

Utilize the Windows

During daylight hours, pull pack window coverings to allow natural light to flood your living space with warmth. As the sun starts to set, close them against the cold to keep warmth in. Choose thick or thermal drapes or wooden plantation shutters over airy sheer curtains and thin blinds.
