Common Air Conditioning Repair Problems

Most AC systems are built to last 12 – 15 years. The better and more faithfully yours is maintained, the more productive, repair-free years you can expect. But even well-maintained systems eventually require professional attention beyond simple annual maintenance.

When that time comes, here are a few of the more common warning signs, each associated with your system’s air handler:

Frozen Coils

The coils inside your air handler – the system unit usually installed in the attic – are prone to freezing and can do so for a variety of reasons. Evaporator coils help to both cool and dehumidify your home. When the air is dehumidified, moisture forms as condensation which, in turn, drips off the coil. When something goes wrong, this moisture can freeze, and so can the coils. Should that happen, you’ll notice a gradual loss of cool air. Our advice: don’t wait too long since frozen coils left unattended for too long can destroy the air handler. Annual preventive maintenance is the best way to keep the air handler in top working condition.

High-Pitched Wailing

If you’re suddenly being serenaded by the sound of wailing chances are bearings inside the air handler are the cause. There’s a DIY way to see if that really is the case.

  • Shut off power to the air handler
  • Pull on the motor shaft
  • If it gives more than 1/8” in any direction, chances are the bearings are worn and need to be replaced.

The Air Handler is Leaking

Looking for a good reason to climb into your attic? Here’s one: to check the condensation pan in your air handler to see if water is leaking from it or anywhere else. Water leaks should be repaired as quickly as possible to prevent structural damage to your home along with mold and mildew problems.

Electrical Problems

The blower assembly contains a significant number of electrical wires, and over time, they can become frayed or corroded. The motor itself can also develop an electrical issue related to wear and tear on capacitors. If you’re not trained to work on HVAC equipment, it’s a good idea to hire a local expert to work on your system.
