How to Clean Your Indoor Air

This may surprise you, jolt you, or confirm what you already believe or know – about 90% of your time is spent indoors. There are all sorts of comments you can make about that, but for now, let’s focus on one. And that is, the more time you spend indoors, the more prone you are to the perils of indoor air pollution.

How bad can that be, you might ask? Pretty darn bad, considering that, on average, indoor air is up to five times more polluted than outdoor and that’s according to the EPA. Which means you have two basic choices: sit back and breathe it or take steps to clean up the air for the good of your entire family. That’s especially important if anyone at home is prone to or suffering from allergies, asthma, or some other upper respiratory ailment.

So let the clean-up begin with these proven-effective methods:

Open Windows When You Can

Cleaning tends to stir up a lot of the dust, bacteria, dander, and other toxins or allergens that have settled in your home, which can worsen indoor air quality. When you clean, open some windows to help draw out these culprits.

Avoid Synthetic Air Fresheners

Many modern scented candles and other air fresheners release toxins into the air and can be especially harmful to pets. So avoid using air fresheners or opt for 100% natural fresheners like essential oils and soy or beeswax based candles.

Bring Nature Indoors

The benefits of houseplants cannot be overstated. They take in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. People and animals take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. By bringing plants into your home, you’re creating a symbiotic relationship, filtering the air, creating fresh oxygen, and beautifying your home. These plants are especially effective in the battle against indoor air pollution: Aloe, English Ivy, Bamboo Palm, Snake Palm, and others.

Eliminate Contaminants at Their Source

Many in-home contaminants can be prevented from building up. Dust, for example, can be kept to a minimum with a regular and thorough cleaning regimen. Mold spores and toxins can be eliminated by finding and treating small mold infestations in your home before they turn into larger problems. Even pollen can be kept to a minimum by circulating the air in your house with a fan instead of opening windows during allergy seasons.

Keep the Dirt Outside

People bring all sorts of dirt or pollutants into your home on the soles of their footwear. To help keep that problem at bay – or wipe it out altogether – put a floor mat by each entrance. For added security, ask family members and guests to remove their shoes upon entering.
