Ideal Temperatures for Sleeping

Think about the things that make you feel relaxed and comfortable as you settle in for the night. A good book, your favorite TV show, soft, luxurious bedding…

Now imagine trying to enjoy all of that in a room that’s either too hot or too cold – whether you’re sweating bullets or shivering as you try to get some Zs. Doesn’t sound like a recipe for a good night’s sleep, does it?

You see, a comfortable bedroom is an important part of a getting the restful sleep you need, with temperature having as big of an influence as any. Read on to learn more.

Cool and Comfortable

According to the Sleep Foundation, the ideal bedroom temperature for sleeping is approximately 65 degrees F (give or take a few degrees to account for personal preference). This recommendation is based on how we sleep – as in, the pattern known as the circadian rhythm. To keep the circadian rhythm in balance, our bodies absorb information about our surroundings, like the amount of light, noise, and heat. Cooler, darker rooms are generally easier to fall asleep in than those that are well-lit and hot.

As we fall asleep, out bodies shut down some automatic processes that help regulate internal temperature, such as sweating or shivering. Then, even the smallest atmospheric changes, like bedroom temperature, can be enough to wake us.

Adjust Temperature for Infants

Infants’ smaller bodies are more sensitive to temperature changes, so keep the room slightly warmer (around 67-69 degrees). But don’t forget to factor in sleepwear and blankets; too many layers can make it too warm and disrupt their sleep.

Tips for Just the Right Temp

Getting your bedroom temperature just right can be a challenge, especially if there are other household members to consider. Here are a few pieces of equipment that can eliminate thermostat squabbles and please everyone in your home, no matter what their temperature preferences might be.

  • Smart ThermostatsOne of the easiest and most convenient ways to take control of indoor temperatures is with a smart thermostat. Their intelligent programming takes note of how you use your heating and cooling system to create a daily schedule. So, if you like a cooler bedroom at night, your smart thermostat will automatically cool things down. You can program personalized settings as well.
  • Zoned System – A zoned heating and cooling system uses a series of dampers and levers to redirect airflow through the ductwork, controlled with two or more thermostats. Place living areas on one zone and bedrooms on another; or, add a third zone for the ultimate in bedroom control. That saves money on heating and cooling since you won’t need to heat or cool unoccupied areas of the house.
  • Ductless Mini Split – For those times when your existing HVAC equipment, your homes’ design, and your personal preferences just can’t see eye to eye, a ductless mini split can deliver fine-tuned comfort in a single room or area of your home. With no ductwork needed, easy installation, and whisper quiet operation, ductless air also can be the perfect solution for a finished basement, room addition, or garage-turned-workspace.
