This one eventually became a no-brainer – R-22 refrigerant (you might know it better as Freon) depletes the earth’s ozone layer.
It’s not as if that fact was just discovered yesterday – it’s been known for decades. Which is why, in 1987, the world’s leading nations agreed to ban the production of all ozone-depleting substances, including Freon.
As you can imagine, it’s taken quite some time for the air conditioning world to retool their manufacturing processes and find a suitable and equally effective refrigerant. Now that both of those goals have been achieved, the long-term phase-out of R-22 refrigerant is just about complete. Taking its place is R-410A, a non-ozone-depleting refrigerant. All AC systems manufactured since 2010 contain this eco-friendly alternative.
Fast forward to January 1, 2020, after which R-22 can no longer be purchased except in recycled form. Even if you can get it to recharge your home’s AC system, you’re going to pay a whole lot more than you once did. Before 2010, for example, Freon was available for about $5 – $10 a pound. Today, with ever-decreasing supply but still a substantial demand, you’re more likely to pay $75 – $100 a pound. Given that the AC systems, on average, require six to fourteen pounds of refrigerant, you could pay up to $1400 to recharge your system, not counting labor.
Is it Time to Replace Your AC System?
We can’t answer that for you, but we can present your primary options.
- Get as much as you can from your existing AC system and replace it only when you have no other choice. Just keep in mind that costly repairs can happen along the way while your electricity bill keeps climbing.
- Wait until if or when your system needs more Freon (remember, all that’s left are recycled products) and then decide either to have it done or, depending on the cost, replace your system at that time.
- Or, put an end to the “wait and see” game and replace your system now.
Advantages of Buying a New AC System
You have everything to gain by replacing your AC system now, including:
- Worry-free operation
- Greatly reduced utility costs which – enough savings, in fact, to eventually cover the cost of your new system
- Cleaner indoor air
