Save Money with A/C Self-Maintenance

This is the story of “The Little AC System That Could”.  All summer long it chugged and chugged away to provide the coolest and most comfortable environment it knew how.

Come early August, it realized it still had a long journey ahead and began doubting its own fortitude. “Help me,” said the little AC system. “I’m big enough and I’m strong enough to last the whole season, but I don’t think I can go it alone.”

So, what did the caring family do in the home of the Little AC System That Could? Why of course…they came to its aid and, just as he predicted, the Little AC System That Could completed its journey.

Every story has a moral, and here’s ours: the more you work to keep your AC system in tip-top shape, the better it’s going to perform. Here are a few tried and true suggestions:

  • Clean or replace your filter about every 4 weeks – after a while, you’ll figure out the right interval for your filters.
  • Keep weeds and shrubs away from your outdoor condensing unit so it can properly vent indoor heat.
  • Clean the coils on your outside condensing unit – a garden hose does the job nicely.
  • Keep an eye on your indoor air handler for water leaks. In our neck of the woods, it’s usually located in the attic.
  • Keep window treatments and all other obstructions away from registers and vents.
  • Switch to programmable thermostats to cut back on system wear and tear and energy costs.
  • Install one or more ceiling fans so you can enjoy maximum comfort with even greater energy savings.
