“Should I Replace My Furnace?”

Heating systems are like all things mechanical in at least one regard – they don’t last forever.  That’s a given.  But how do you know when it’s time to replace it?  Even when you know it’s not operating up to par, it can be hard to let go of, especially when you don’t need the added expense.

But have you ever considered the fact that multiple repairs can cost even more than a replacement system?

For your own sake, we offer you these common signs that a heating system may be on its way out:

  • Age of System. Today’s newer heating systems are designed to last up to 20 years. Older systems? More like 12-15 years. If yours is at or past its peak, you might want to replace it now. That way, you’ll have more time to consider what’s best for your home and budget.
  • Hot and cold spots. If your heating system was properly designed and installed, you should be getting equal amounts of heat in every room.  If not, and you have a multi-zone system, a thermostat might be causing the problem. Other possible causes include general system wear and tear, poor air distribution, perhaps even a leaky duct.
  • Rising utility costs. Today’s newer heating systems feature energy efficiency ratings up to 95% and higher. By contrast, a 10-year old system, even if properly maintained, probably has an efficiency rating of 60% or less. That adds up to significantly higher utility costs. Sure, the older system probably has more good years left in it, but not inexpensive years. By replacing your furnace now, energy savings alone can cover the cost of your new system.
  • Sounding off. Old furnaces often start to make some strange noises as they near the end. Have you heard any banging, popping, rattling, or squealing noises? Does your blower turn on and off frequently or does it blow cold air sometimes? If so, it might be time to replace it.
